Area Description
This district is bounded by Adelaide St. to the west, Fanshawe Park Road to the south, Highbury to the east and the city boundary to the north. It is characterised by Stoney Creek which winds through the area, open green spaces and walking trails. It was named after Rev. Mr. Edmund Stoney, the first Methodist Minister in London Township. He immigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1818 and settled in the area.
The southern part of this district, generally known as the Grenfell neighbourhood, is comprised of a mixture of 1970 to 1980 era single family homes, townhouses and apartment buildings. Further east, on the north side of Fanshawe Park Road is the new developing area of Northridge Heights. The northern part of the planning district, generally referred to as the Stoney Creek neighbourhood, is home to a growing subdivision of smaller single family homes as well as the new Stoney Creek Public School, which opened in September 2010, and Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School, which opened in September 2000. This area is also the home of the Stoney Creek Community Centre, YMCA and Library which opened in 2010.
